Food as Medicine: Snow Ear & Asian Pear Soup

Snow ear mushrooms and Asian pears are not only healthy and nutritious, but also make for simple sweet treats.

Snow ear mushroom is an edible medicinal mushroom used in Traditional Chinese medicine to reduce inflammation, regulate the immune system, support lung function and maintain healthy skin. Studies show these beautiful mushrooms to promote the following:

  • Immune regulation and antitumor activity

  • Neuroprotective effects

  • Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects

  • Skin protective effects

Asian pears have been shown to help with allergies including symptoms such as rhinitis, asthma, and eczema. Asian pears include quercetin and rutin which reduces the severity of immune responses.


Simple Snow Ear & Asian Pear Soup


  • 2 Asian pears, washed, peeled, cored, cut into bite sized pieces

  • 20-30 grams of snow fungus, rehydrated overnight, cut into bite sized pieces

  • Enough spring water to submerge all ingredients

  • Optional: goji berries or honey to sweeten


  • In a pot, bring the water, snow mushrooms, and pears to a boil

  • Simmer covered for 45 minutes, or until all ingredients are soft

  • Stir in optional toppings and serve warm
