Trigeminal neuralgia is known as one of the most common causes of facial pain. Acupuncture has been successful in treating various symptoms of trigeminal neuralgia. Research shows acupuncture is able to reduce shock-like pain, intensity of pain, and mandibular limitations. Acupuncture can also be used as a complementary therapeutic method for treatment for severe pain control. The analgesic effects of acupuncture are thought to be due to the increased levels of mediators including enkephalin, serotonin and endorphins. Acupuncture remains a safe and effective therapy for trigeminal neuralgia.
